United Way of Lake County, Inc.Our mission is to improve people's lives by mobilizing the community to identify key community needs and collaborate with solutions that have measurable results and make a positive impact. The United Way of Lake County focuses on four areas; basic needs; health and wellness; children and families; and senior citizens.Housing in Lake County can take many different forms; from well-manicured estates to people living in their cars. The Emergency and Transitional Housing Program assists those in need of a more permanent housing solution, when available. Once food and shelter concerns are met, people can look to the future with hope. In addition, this program counsels people about life skills and how to, once again, become self-sufficient productive members of our community. Erin survived growing up in an abusive family. She was so happy the day she got married. The happiest day of her life was when she gave birth to her beautiful twin daughters. Erin's world came crashing down as her husband became abusive. She found the strength to go to the Forbes House Protective Shelter Program and to transition to safe, long term housing. Erin made the choice to protect her twin daughters and break the cycle of abuse. Our neighbors in Lake County find themselves homeless for many reasons. Traditionally, these people suffer from alcoholism and mental health issues, but have recently been joined by young adults with no family safety net, families destroyed by the housing mortgage crisis and people impacted by sudden job loss. The Homeless Outreach Initiative coordinates efforts to help people rebuild their life, whatever the core cause of their initial homelessness. Working with other community partners, we provide food, shelter, tools and training to help them overcome their challenges and create a new and productive life. Cy Pres Award DonationUnited Way of Lake County will utilize the Dworken & Bernstein funds to provide labor and materials to isolated senior citizens who are physically, mentally, or financially unable to safely maintain their homes.
