Geauga County Courthouse Improvement Fund

Constructed in 1869 after a disastrous fire at a cost of $70,000, it initially contained one courtroom with a dome and a balcony and all of the various county offices. The non-judicial county offices have relocated and the Courthouse now houses two General Division Courtroom, two Magistrate hearing rooms, the Law Library, and the Clerk of Courts.

Over the years, the Geauga County Courthouse has been remodeled at various times to address changes in functions and needs. Most recent renovations occurred in 2006-07 when the Board of County Commissioners of Geauga spent almost $2 million to relocate and upgrade the Clerk of Courts offices, replace the courthouse elevator, improve the HVAC system and create two magistrate hearing rooms. Because many of the renovations were done on an ad hoc basis, much of the original and historical appearance was lost. Advances in technology have created demands that are difficult for a 140 year old courthouse to accommodate.

Cy Pres Award Donation

The Geauga County Courthouse Improvement Fund was created to enable the receipt of private donations for the purpose of restoring the historical dignity of the courthouse while enhancing the courthouse with appropriate technological advances. Contributions will be used for the continuing renovation, furnishing the courtrooms and offices with historically appropriate furniture and accessories and adding the technology that will enable the presentation and sharing of information while preserving the look and feel of an 1869 courthouse.
